He is played by Hong Kong actor and dance choreographer Danny Chan Kwok-kwan, who bears a striking resemblance to the kung fu hero. In Ip Man 3, Lee assumes a larger role in the story. Ip Man 2 was originally intended to focus on Ip and his celebrated disciple, Bruce Lee, but the film’s producers were unable to come to an agreement with Lee’s estate, so the storyline was scrapped and Lee was only briefly shown as a child. The fight’s outcome is only slightly more plausible than Tyson’s attempts to speak Cantonese in the movie - but both are irresistibly entertaining.

In short, a good enough conclusion to the Ip Man saga.A series of PG-13, action-packed biopics, the Ip Man franchise is based on the life of Yip Man, played by Yen. I’m not the best judge in these matters, and I certainly wouldn’t want to rile Tyson, but I must say he appears a bit slow compared with Yen.Īnyway, Yen is appealing, the story moves right along, and the martial arts sequences are (to my untrained eye) impressive. He will, naturally, have a grand showdown with Ip Man. The American bad guy is portrayed by none other than Mike Tyson, clearly chosen for his presence rather than his acting abilities. Yen’s Ip Man remains righteous throughout, and occasionally gifts the other characters (and us) with nuggets of wisdom.

The film glances at some of the genre’s most common tropes, including the rivalry between martial arts schools and the staging of illegal and dangerous fighting matches for gambling purposes. Ip Man and other parents fight back, and there are a few subplots, one featuring a corrupt cop. A gang of thugs attacks the school attended by the son - they are working for an American who wants to develop the property. It’s 1959, and Ip Man has settled down in Hong Kong with his wife and son. Martial arts films are basically action melodramas, and that’s true here.
